3 Tips to Help You Plan Your Unique Engagement Session

Planning an engagement session is an exciting process! It's a time to celebrate your love, capture beautiful memories, and allow your unique personalities to shine. This is a unique opportunity for you as a couple to express your love story in a creative and personal way. It's a chance to collaborate with your photographer to showcase your relationship and create photos that you can cherish for a lifetime. But how do you make sure your engagement session is truly "you"? How do you create an experience that reflects your unique bond and the journey you've shared together? I’ve put together three tips to help you plan an engagement session that is unique to you as a couple.

#1 Choose A Meaningful Location

The location of your engagement session can tell a story. I believe it's more than just a backdrop for your photos; it's a part of your narrative. That's why I always urge couples to choose a location that holds special meaning for them! Think about places that are significant in your relationship. Maybe it's the spot where you had your first date, your favorite date spot, or a family property that holds fond memories. Choosing a location that's personalized to you will make your photos more meaningful than if you picked a random place you've never been to before. I am not saying you can’t do it, it’s just that when you look back at them they will be more special.

#2 Incorporate Your Favorite Activities

This is where we can get creative and really show off what makes you unique as a couple! Think about an activity that you both enjoy doing together and let's find a way to incorporate it into your session. I once worked with a couple that used to perform at open mic nights, with her singing and him playing the guitar. So naturally, we went to their favorite bar and recreated that. But you don't have to be a musician to make this work! I've had couples grab drinks at their favorite bar, enjoy a coffee picnic at their favorite sunrise spot, make pancakes in their cozy home, and even take their boat out for a romantic sunset session. The possibilities here are endless!

#3 Choose Outfits That You Are Comfortable In!

Finally, let's talk about what you're going to wear! I always advise couples to choose one dressy outfit and one casual outfit for their engagement session. This not only offers variety in your photos, but it also opens up our posing options. If all outfits are dressy, we're limited in the types of poses and movements we can do. I love interactive, candid, and movement-based prompts that capture your natural expressions and mannerisms, and sometimes, these work best in casual clothes. But no matter what you choose to wear, make sure it's something that makes you feel confident and comfortable!
